Saving Christmas in the Village
In the past the Blackheath Village Traders Association (BVTA) raised money for and erected the Christmas Lights. Our gratitude goes to all of the BVTA members, their families and friends for their continued support and maintenance of the lights over 23 years. Without the BVTA we would not be in a position to continue the Christmas Lights tradition.
The BVTA closed it’s doors several years ago and since then Blackheath Lights Limited was set up to raise funds to continue the Christmas lights tradition for the whole of the Blackheath community. So far we have raised more than £35,000 and managed to buy and erect new carbon footprint lights and Christmas trees with new lights. We have also enjoyed fund raising events along the way.
The support we have had from the local community has been fantastic with several large sums being raised from both the Business and Resident communities. Lewisham council have provided large amounts of help and support. All donations both large and small have been very gratefully received.
We would like to thank all of the people who have helped us to continue the tradition of Christmas lights in Blackheath Village. There have been many willing helpers from Cherry picker drivers to Father Christmases who donated time freely to help us keep the lights shining but without the thousands who kindly donated their money we would not have the lights at all.
We need to continue to raise money for the ongoing costs of the lights so a “Friends of the Blackheath Lights” scheme is currently being prepared for those of us who might like to contribute on an annual basis. This will give us a consistent amount of funds to stage the events on the “switch on” night and to install and remove the lights each year.
Traditionally at 4:30 p.m.on the first Saturday in December is the Blackheath Christmas Lights switch on day where a celebrity is invited to press the button supported by the Vicar of All Saints Church and the Right Honorable mayors of Lewisham and Greenwich.
